Putin warns US it will shoot down jets over Syria
Fears of a GLOBAL WAR have surfaced after Russia warned the US that it would shoot down American jets flying over Syria.
RUSSIA has warned it will shoot down US warplanes flying over Syria as tensions between Vladimir Putin and the West escalated.
Russian military chiefs have set up sophisticated anti-aircraft missile systems in the war-torn country that may be a “surprise” to unidentified planes and helicopters.
Russia’s Defence Ministry says there are numerous state-of-the-art S-300 and S-400 air defence systems deployed and ready to take down enemy aircraft.
The S-400 air defence systems in Syria and can shoot down most planes. Syria itself has S-200 as well as BUK systems, and their technical capabilities have been updated over the past year.
They are stationed at the Tartus naval supply base and the Khmeimim airbase where Russian leader Vladimir Putin bases his warships and warplanes.
The Kremlin is taking such a hardline because it says if the Western forces target territory controlled by Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad this would put Russian personnel in danger.
The Russians are nervous after “leaks” in the Western media alleged Washington is poised to launch airstrikes against Syrian government forces.
Russian Defence Ministry spokesperson General Igor Konashenkov, said: “Any missile or air strikes on the territory controlled by the Syrian government will create a clear threat to Russian servicemen.
“Russian air defense system crews are unlikely to have time to determine in a ‘straight line’ the exact flight paths of missiles and then who the warheads belong to.
“And all the illusions of amateurs about the existence of ‘invisible’ jets will face a disappointing reality.
Tensions escalated after a US airstrike on Russian-backed Syrian government forces earlier this month. The strike, which the US claimed was an accident, reportedly killed 83 of Bashar al-Assad’s men.
The Russian foreign ministry swiftly hit back, accusing the US of “supporting” terror cult Islamic State.
Peace talks between Washington and Moscow in Geneva collapsed on Monday.
War fears were further heightened last night. The Kremlin confirmed it sent a warship to the Mediterranean.
The Mirazh missile corvette, armed with state-of-the-art cruise missiles, follows another two Black Sea Fleet vessels, The Serpukhov and The Zelyony Dol, which had been due to reach the Mediterranean on Wednesday.
A top US army official warned a full-scale war between nations is “almost guaranteed”.
